Family Friendly Poetry, Theater, Music and Art

April is National Poetry Month and the Upper Perkiomen Valley Library celebrated by holding a student poetry contest. On Thursday night, April 10, 2014, at 7 p.m., winners, along with many others from elementary school age through high school age who submitted poems to the contest, will be reading their poems at the library – 350 Main Street, Red Hill. This event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

85 students are among the cast of Annie Jr. (an abridged one act version of the Broadway play Annie) that is appearing at Civic Theater, 19th Street, Allentown. Four performances are scheduled; Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 6 p.m., Friday, April 11, 2014 at 6 p.m., Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 11 a.m. and Saturday, April 12, 2014 at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased in advance online, or at the door.

Stop by Trexler Library at Muhlenberg College between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2014 for the First Annual Edible Book Festival.

In celebration of Trexler Library’s 25th anniversary we are hosting our First Annual Edible Book Festival.  Competitors utilize edible materials to create works that are representations or interpretations of books.   Entries can involve a play on the words of a book title (“S’more and Peace”), a reference to an author (“Ezra Pound Cake”), or physically be in the shape of a book.  Participation is open to the Muhlenberg community and the neighboring public.

Muhlenberg College Women’s Ensemble sings at 4 p.m. on Saturday, April 12, 2014 in the Egner Memorial Chapel. Also at Muhlenberg College, 2400 Chew Street, Allentown, on Saturday, Big Band Jazz Concert at the Empie Theater, Baker Center for the Arts, beginning at 8 p.m.

Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales will be on stage at the Miller Symphony Hall, 23 N. 6th Street, Allentown, on Sunday, April 13, 2014 at 2 p.m.

A giant genie, princesses, and wizards abound in the marvelous tales of Scheherazade, the storyteller heroine of Aladdin and Other Enchanting Tales. She tells her tales to heal her Sultan and save his kingdom. Through the magic of the stories of Sinbad, Aladdin, Ali Baba, and The Kalandar Prince the Sultan makes a journey of self-discovery, ultimately discovering his true capacity to forgive and to love. Set to the evocative music of Rimsky-Korsakov.

Admission to the Allentown Art Museum, 31 N. 5th Street, is always free on Sundays from noon to 4 p.m. The recently opened exhibit British Pop Prints continues through June 22, 2014. The museum is also open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 11 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The classic musical Annie Get Your Gun appears at Central Catholic High School, 301 N. Fourth Street, Allentown on the weekend of April 24-26, 2014. You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown will be in Bangor at Pius X High School, 580 Third Avenue from April 24-26, 2014 – call 610-588-3291 ext 308 for more information.
