Save yourself the drive to Washington, D.C. or Philadelphia to check out the cherry blossoms and festivities and instead, take the short scenic drive to Allentown’s Cedar Beach (the great green park between Parkway Drive and Hamilton Street; 2600 Parkway Blvd) for this Saturday’s celebration. The second annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Allentown, which begins at 10 a.m. on April 25th, will have music, kite making, puppet theater, pavement chalk art, origami, and more.
The Muhlenberg College Pep Band starts off the musical portion of the day at 11:30 a.m. East Asian Music by the Bethlehem group Mekar Sari Gamelan playing traditional instruments begins at 2:30 p.m. The final band scheduled is the Acoustic Project, with a 60’s and 70’s rock set list, beginning at 3 p.m.
The Mock Turtle Marionette Theater will present puppet shows throughout the day, the Repertory Dance Theater Company of Allentown will take the stage at 1:30 p.m., and there will also be talks on meditation and Buddhism, and bonsai demonstrations.
Children and adults can learn and get busy making kites, painting parasols, folding origami, creating pavement chalk art, build puppets, and play lawn games. For more information and details, read Festival blooms around city’s cherry trees.
