Jumpstart Spring

Ignore the rumors of one more snowfall and take advantage of some of the arts events taking place this week and next.

The Eric Mintel Quartet are performing at the free live jazz concert tonight, Thursday, March 3rd, 2016, at Allentown Art Museum (31 North Fifth Street, Allentown), from 6 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Head over to the museum a little earlier and take a look at the current exhibits; This Light of Ours: Activist Photographers of the Civil Rights Movement and The Plain and Ornamental Branches: A Sampling of Pennsylvania’s Girlhood Embroideries, as well as the paintings and art in the permanent collection. Admission is free after 4 p.m. on Thursdays (and free on Sunday afternoons from noon – 4 p.m.).

The Valley Choral Society presents two free pops concerts; Sentimental Journey: musical favorites of the 1940s, Sunday March 6, 2016, 4 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church (19 South 5th Street, Telford, PA) and Sunday, March 13, 2016, 4 p.m. at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (81 Main Street, Pennsburg, PA).

Several local high schools are presenting musical theater this weekend, today through Sunday; Thoroughly Modern Millie, 7 p.m. today, Friday, and Saturday, and 2 p.m on Sunday, at Saucon Valley High School (2097 Polk Valley Road, Hellertown, PA); The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, 7 p.m. today, Friday, and Saturday and 3 p.m. on Sunday at Salisbury High School (500 East Montgomery Street Allentown, PA ); Annie Get Your Gun, 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday at Northwestern Lehigh High School (6493 Route 309 . New Tripoli, PA ). Some of these shows do sell out, so you might want to buy your tickets or call ahead before heading to the theater.

Tickets are now on sale for next weekend’s musical production at Upper Perkiomen High School, Around the World in 80 Days, based on the classic Jules Verne book. The “gold star matinee” for senior citizens is on Wednesday, March 9th at 1 p.m., while the public is invited to evening performances on Thursday, Friday and Saturday (7 p.m. curtain) and the Sunday matinee (2 p.m.), March 10-13, 2016. Tickets may also be purchased at the door, an hour before the show starts. The show is performed in the auditorium at the Upper Perkiomen High School, 2 Walt Road, Pennsburg, PA.
