Consider making the time tonight, Friday, July 26th, to drive over to the free concert by Break From Blue Collar (barbershop quartet) this evening at Church of the Holy Spirit, 2871 Barndt Road, Harleysville, PA (remember the bridge is out on Route 63/Sumneytown Pike between Green Lane and Harleysville, so you may need to allow some extra time to get there). Revisit the First Day of Summer and Make Music Upper Perk 2019!

Has it only been a month since the first day of summer? (And nearly twenty degrees cooler?) One month ago, on June 21, 2019, Make Music Upper Perk celebrated its seventh year of bringing the community together to make and share music. Over 300 musicians played over 135 sets over the course of 13 hours. And a roving band of seven photographers traveled around five towns and stopped at over twenty places to take pictures of so many of the people who were a part of the event.

Jazz at New Gosh Park and Shakespeare in Green Lane (and a Moon Party!)

Like me, and many of our neighbors, you may have spent yesterday beginning the clean-up as the flood waters receded. There is a strong possibility that it will be a long process, so may I suggest you pace yourself, and plan on a few (free!) breaks in your weekend and week to take a breath and enjoy music, art, and the spoken word.

Tonight, the Red Hill Jazz Band is holding their 1st Annual Jazz Concert at the New Goshenhoppen Park band shell (W. Third Street in East Greenville), from 7-8 p.m. This Saturday (July 13, 2019) evening concert is open to the public free of charge.

The Red Hill Jazz Band is a smaller ensemble of musicians playing music from the era of the big bands all the way to more current renditions with a jazzy flare. You’ll recognize favorites from Elvis such as “Can’t Help Falling in Love”, to “Eye of the Tiger” from the Rocky soundtrack.

Don’t miss out on being part of the newest tradition the Red Hill Band has to offer with their first ever public jazz band concert.

Thursday night, July 18th, 2019, Green Lane Park amphitheater (by the tennis courts and playground) is hosting Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure. The free open air performance begins at 6:30 p.m. Bring a blanket, or lawn chairs, and consider having a picnic before or during Commonwealth Classic Theatre Company’s show.

The city is adrift in moral decay. The Duke decides to go undercover as a holy man, leaving his holier than thou deputy, Angelo, in charge to harshly enforce the strict morality laws of the city. Angelo begins his rule by making an example of Claudio, sentencing him to death for getting his fiancé with child. Claudio’s sister Isabella, a young novitiate, pleads for his life. Hypocritically, Angelo agrees to spare Claudio but at great cost to Isabella. She has an impossible choice to make. Give up her innocence or give up her brother for execution.

In Shakespeare’s bawdy and witty, dark comedy, questions of mercy, justice, corruption of power, and religious hypocrisy are explored in a thrilling story line seemingly made for today. What are the human consequences of power in the wrong hands? How can the scales of justice and mercy be leveled fairly and humanely? Join us in exploring the questions that lay at the passionate heart of William Shakespeare’s timeless and timely work.

**Parental Discretion Advised: While we are sensitive to the family nature of outdoor performance and welcome all ages, CCTC is not a children’s theatre company. Shakespeare’s play deals with mature subject matter that you may not consider appropriate for your younger children.

And don’t miss out on noting and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the first manned landing (June 19) and walk on the moon (June 20). PBS has been running a wonderful series of documentaries on the subject, and various news and cable stations are following suit this weekend and week. Naturally science museums, among others, will also be marking the occasion. Locally, the Philip and Muriel Berman Museum of Art at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA (601 E Main Street) is hosting a free all day, and most of the night, free Moon Party with activities for all ages on Saturday, June 20, 2019, beginning at noon. While there, check out the current exhibit Science Fiction;   featuring the work of international artists who were all born in the 1960s and 70s, when the line between science and fiction seemed to blur in unprecedented ways. Admission to museum is alway free and open to the public.

The fun includes:

  • Food Trucks
  • Local Brewery Truck
  • Moon Bounce
  • Face Painting
  • Outdoor games, Art activities, Slime-making
  • Photo booth with an astronaut
  • Scavenger Hunts
  • Solar Telescope
